How Resco helps cities in Slovakia get smarter – MADhack 2018 Recap

Did you know that we created an app that supports cities in Resco’s homeland, Slovakia? Lepšia obec (=Better City) aims to streamline relationships and simplify communication between municipalities and its residents.

Hackathon & Smart Cities

Every year, we organize a mobile application development hackathon for students called MADhack. Our goal is to create opportunities for young people to showcase their talent, creativity and sharpen technical skills – in practice and with real experts.

In previous years of MADhack, students worked on their ideas for an application for 2 days, then presented projects in the very early stages. The last one was yet the 4th edition, and we wanted to do things a bit differently. We chose Smart cities to be the main topic. This MADhack’s overall goal was to come up with a solution that connects Resco Cloud technology to IoT tools and applications.

5 teams had 4 months to work on 3 unique tasks. Students worked on projects for selected mayors and their cities that would support:

  • Intelligent waste sorting
  • Smart lightning
  • Prevention of illegal logging

Are 4 months enough to develop an app that would solve these issues?

„In previous editions, we learned that young developers can be truly inventive. Now, thanks to their creative minds, they were able to come up with practical solutions to common and troublesome issues of today’s municipalities.“ Juraj Mojík, Product Manager, Resco

The winning team decided to fight a problem with lighting in a small Slovak city. The ambition was to control each city lamp more effectively to improve citizen safety. 4-month effort resulted in a sensor applicable to each lamp – that is universal and cost-savvy. This could not be implemented to practice without Resco’s Lepšia obec app which is a part of the solution.

Other two winners and their solutions both intend to motivate people to sort waste with innovative technologies.
